Edwards Air Force Base

In November, We Are the Next partnered with the Base Historic Preservation Officer at the Edwards Air Force to offer a special educational program in observation of Native American Heritage Month for the 4th grade students of Irving L. Branch Elementary School.  Students learned about the native people of Southern California and explored the story of The Rainbow Bridge, an origin story from the Chumash tribe.

After learning about the Chumash, students recreated their own interpretations of the origin story using a map of the Channel Islands and California coast and various images of plants, animals, and objects, central to their way of life. Students enthusiastically brought their maps to life with vibrant colors. Some students even took their projects a step further by adding pop-up features!
