CITY101: Local Government

OVERVIEW
Participants gain a more in-depth understand of the actual voting
process and local government, compared to what is covered in the public
school curriculum. Armed with new knowledge, students come to see
themselves as someone who can be a leader in their community.

COMMUNITY EXPERT
A local government representative comes to speak with students.

ACTIVITY
Participants work in small groups to create a mock-community
organizing plan in order to rally local residents around a current issue
facing their community.

CITY101: Housing

OVERVIEW
Participants are exposed to the reality of housing in our region. With
a community expert, participants learn how to access and utilize city
resources in order to rent an apartment, set up utilities, and understand
their rights as a tenant.

COMMUNITY EXPERT
A guest from a local housing advocacy and/or city employment
assistance agency come to lead an activity

ACTIVITY
Participants work in small groups to identify a local rental listing to
use for the purposes of the activity. Participants calculate the required
income in order to rent the unit and remain financial stable, and list
items required in order to apply as a prospective tenant.

CITY101: Cultural Heritage

OVERVIEW
Participants gain an understanding of cultural resources (cultural centers,
historic sites, etc.) and learn how these places represent the residents in
their community. Participants discuss the diversity of residents in their
neighborhood, while gaining a deep understanding of the actions they
can take to know and support their neighbors.

COMMUNITY EXPERT
Staff, volunteer, or artist associated with a local cultural organization

ACTIVITY
As a group, participants reflect upon their own origins to illustrate the
diversity in local residents.

OVERVIEW
Participants gain insight into the job application process. In this
workshop, we discuss the application process, interview etiquette, and
the importance of professionalism in the workplace.

A guest from a local government or independent employment agency

With the help of our team and our community expert, participants build
their first resume.

CITY101: Urban Farming

OVERVIEW
This workshop explores the role that community gardens play in
combating poor health in our cities. Participants hear from a local
gardener or urban farmer and learn how they can have access to better
produce by starting a community garden or using local gardens.

COMMUNITY EXPERT
A presenter from a local community garden

ACTIVITY
With the community expert, participants track the ways that local
gardens enhance air quality and provide food for residents. Participants
plant seedlings they are able to bring home after the workshop.

CITY101: Community Storytelling

OVERVIEW
In this workshop, students will go on a field trip to Rancho Los Cerritos!
Participants go on a brief tour of the site, and then complete a unique
activity with staff that enhances self-esteem and introduces them to new
marketing techniques.

COMMUNITY EXPERT
Staff from the Rancho will work with the group

ACTIVITY
Participants complete a brief tour of the historic site. Afterwards, they
work with site staff to discuss how these places can improve or adapt
to captivate the attention of a 21st century audience. In small groups,
participants design a marketing plan for the site using new technologies.

This workshop addresses common safety concerns for the neighborhood,
and common infractions committed by young adults in the general area.

A professional from Out of Harm's Way will be attending to facilitate the workshop

ACTIVITY
Participants take part in an actual self-defense lesson, led by a trained
expert. In this workshop, participants learn the ways that they can avoid
confrontation by practicing awareness.

SBCC is a fixture in the Wilmington community, and as it serves an important role we want to ensure our students know about the important work SBCC is doing and how they can get involved in the community. Students who attend this workshop will create a social media plan for the center, working with center staff!

Want to get a better idea of how Long Beach approaches health and sustainability? In this session, Courtney Chatterson from the City's Office of Sustainability will come share the work they're doing to make our city a more environmentally-responsible place to live. We'll do a fun activity, and there will be prizes! Then, we'll tour the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library's flourishing garden.  

Snacks will be served, and all participants will get to pot their own plants to take home!
