CITY101: A Crash Course on Life in Your City (Ages 13-19)
The CITY101 course is a core program by We Are the Next. CITY101 courses take place over multiple weeks and are provided after school to teens in our service area. Through CITY101, teens learn important aspects of life in their cities to encourage them to be active community participants into adulthood. Topics covered include understanding multicultural histories, building community organizing skills, identifying opportunities for volunteerism, and practicing environmental responsibility, among others.
Proud of Where (Ages 11-18)
Participants explore local history by working with staff at historic sites to brainstorm creative ways of sharing the site's story with future visitors. Through the "Proud of Where you Come From" program, students increase awareness of the community and build self esteem in knowing their perspective is valuable, while historic places are given tools to understand and reach a younger audience!
Step Back (All Ages)
Step Back is an installation that allows pedestrians and city explorers to see how the places that surround us are constantly changing. This project demonstrates the dramatic changes that occur around us, from demolishing beloved buildings to saving them, and adding new ones in between. Our team offers occasional walking events to visit the Step Back viewers and learn more about the landscape of Downtown Long Beach.
Talk the Block (All Ages)
Talk the Block is a community event benefitting We Are the Next. These events center around getting to know the story of a local neighborhood. Through Talk the Block events, we pay tribute to the immigrants, minorities, and small business owners working every day to make our neighborhoods better places to live!
