THUMS Island Exploration Day Ticket

THUMS Island Exploration Day Ticket

Join us for an exciting day visiting one of Long Beach’s infamous man-made islands, THUMS island!

The four man-made islands off the coast of Long Beach were commissioned by Texaco, Humble, Union, Mobile, and Shell (THUMS) and built in 1965 and 1966. Landscape architects Linesch & Reynolds disguised drilling rigs and soundproofed machinery to lessen the intrusion to the natural landscape. This tour will provide a closer look at their creation and how they relate to the Long Beach coastline. It’s also an opportunity to discuss their future, as the City of Long Beach intends to decommission the islands and transition to a recreational use.

This summer, students will spend three days working with We Are the Next at the Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum in the City of Industry. They’ll explore the evolution of race relations in California, a collection of buildings built between 1847 and 1927, and the ways we interpret and relate to historic places.
